Exhibition Maximilian1
The Permanent Exhibition
Emperor Maximilian I is one of the most famous figures of the House of Habsburg. Through a successful marriage policy, he laid the foundation for his family's rise to one of the most powerful dynasties in Europe. His life was shaped by fickle fortunes of war, as well as the introduction of new technological advancements that he skillfully knew how to utilize.
On January 12, 2019, the anniversary of his death was commemorated for the 500th time. On this occasion, the Federal Office of the Castle of Austria dedicated the Anniversary Exhibition Maximilian I, A New Era Begins in the Hofburg Innsbruck from May 25 to October 12, 2019. This also marked the kickoff for a new permanent exhibition, which was opened on November 22, 2019, following a brief renovation phase, due to the great success of the anniversary exhibition.
In the permanent exhibition, using state-of-the-art multimedia technology and a digital communication concept, not only the personality of Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519), his wives, life at court, and the influences that shaped his life are addressed, but also topics with European or global significance are consciously presented. The European expeditions westward are treated just as extensively as the journeys of Sigmund von Herberstein eastward undertaken by imperial order. The latest findings from research on the architectural history of the Hofburg Innsbruck, climate history, and the contextualization of politics, religion, and economics round off the exhibition content.
After the permanent exhibition was expanded in July 2020 to include the theme of Mummery, understood as unique costume festivals at the court of Maximilian, the first special exhibition Maximilian1 - The Emperor and His Tournaments was opened in May 2021. This was later incorporated into the permanent exhibition after its conclusion.
